Kitchen Faucet or Tap?

I did not know I was using these two words interchangeably until I had to write an article on the kitchen. It got me scratching my head wondering what is the difference between a faucet and a tap.

Dictionary.com defines a faucet:

Any device for controlling the flow of liquid from a pipe or the like by opening or closing an orifice; tap; cock.

Dictionary.com defines a tap:

A cylindrical stick, long plug, or stopper for closing an opening through which liquid is drawn, as in a cask; spigot. A faucet or cock.

It seem like the words have the same meaning and I had to dig a little deeper to find out.

Apparently, the only difference is what country you are in. In the USA people say faucet and in the UK/Ireland they say tap.
